Sequestration Report, Rally Highlight AFGE Legislative Conference

Hundreds of union activists gather in Washington for 2013 conference

WASHINGTON– The American Federation of Government Employees will hold its 2013 Legislative and Grassroots Mobilization Conference from Feb. 10-13 in Washington, D.C.

About 800 union activists from across the country are expected to attend this year’s conference, which will be held at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill (400 New Jersey Ave. NW).

Several newsworthy events will be open to the press. Below are details.

 

General Legislative Session

When: 8:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Monday, Feb. 11

Sequestration News Conference

When: 11:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 11

Where: Congressional CD, Hyatt

What: University of Baltimore Law School Professor Charles Tiefer, an expert in government contracting, will unveil a memorandum he has authored that provides Congress and agencies with explicit legal guidance on how to achieve most of the $85 billion in savings from sequestration by reducing spending on service contracts instead of cutting federal employees

Capitol Hill Rally

When: Noon Tuesday, Feb. 12 (AFGE members march from Hyatt at 11:30 a.m.)

Where: Upper Senate Park (corner of Constitution Ave. and Delaware Ave. NE)

What: More than 1,500 union activists from AFGE and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) will urge Congress to stop reckless cuts to vital government programs and services

Who: Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y.; Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md.; AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka; AFSCME President Lee Saunders; AFGE National President J. David Cox Sr.; government employees who provide vital public services
